Husband asks wife and teen daughter to turn off music from a concert he insisted he join them for despite mom planning a girls night: 'So we ride home in silence'

Everyone is entitled to their own music taste. This doesn't mean that you have to like it, but you must respect it. Some people want to spend their days listening to Imagine Dragons. While I can't quite fathom this reality, I don't go around trying to stop their fans from buying their records. Music is personal-- it helps shape our sense of self, gets us through tough moments, and helps us reflect on our own lives. I wouldn't expect anyone else to be into exactly the same kind of music as me, because only I have lived a life that has led me to like the kind of music I do. 

However, if I was sharing my music with someone, I would hope they would be respectful. I would hope that they know that it matters, and treat it accordingly. This is the bare minimum expectation, but not everyone always abides by it.

    AITA for listening to music in the car my husband doesn't like after a concert?

    This weekend, my teen daughter and I went to see Megan Moroney. My husband wanted to come along even though I told him it could be just a girls night with my daughter and I. He insisted on going because he didn't want us to be out late by ourselves, even though he does not care for Megan's music.

  • Like the man in this story, who instead of respecting his daughter and wife, chose to stomp all over their sense of taste. Even worse, he did so in a setting where he invited himself along to their excursion. So when his wife was left with hurt feelings, she took to the internet for advice.

    So my daughter and I enjoy the concert so much! She was so excited she almost cried from pure joy. Everything was great, concert ended, we go to our vehicle.

    My daughter and I are still having a good time, kind of on a post- concert high. I turn one of Megan moroney's songs on and we start singing along. My husband. abruptly turns it off. At first I thought, ok maybe he just wants some peace as he drives but he says "turn it on something else!" I said "why, we were listening to

He said "well I don't want to" or someone like that and starts complaining about how awful megan moroney is and how her songs are all man-bashing, etc. I said "whoa buddy we told you that it could just be a girls night like you insisted on coming!" So we ride home in silence and my daughter is really disappointing. One of our favorite things to do is turn the music on and sing along in the car.

He is the driver and chaperone if he wants to aspire to that protector role. He could've said he was tired or had a headache because of how loud the concert was but no, he insulted your and your daughters favorite singer and what's worse is he didn't even have to come in the first place. He insisted on going to what was supposed to be a girls night and made the whole car ride about himself with the "woe is me" act.

If he has a problem with the message of the music he could have had that conversation with you in private and not turned a happy memory into a sad one all about himself.
